Gen. Philip Effiong’s Son Speaks On Biafra Agitation, Nnamdi Kanu’s Approach

nnamdi kanu

Philip Effiong Jr., the son of late Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu’s second-in-command during the 1967 civil war in Nigeria, does not totally agree with the approach adopted by Nnamdi Kanu and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the renewed agitation for an Independent Biafra state.

According to him, the Biafra agitators unwittingly bought into the propaganda sold by those opposed to Biafra by making their agitations seem like an Igbo affair.

He said the Biafra agitators from the South east were not carrying along the minorities, who also participated and made sacrifices during the civil war.

Effiong Jr. said this during an interview with Hassan Arouni of BBC’s Focus on Africa.

He said: “I think there is something fundamentally wrong with their (IPOB) approach which is the fact that they have made it an Igbo problem.

“They bought into the propaganda that the enemy tried to sell and that propaganda is ‘the Igbo people are out to take over Nigeria and dominate the minorities that around them. They are evil people and they try to disunite us.’ For people (IPOB) to make it as an Igbo problem buys into that propaganda.

“Of course, minorities were extremely involved, died, suffered, and played major roles.”

On his memories of the Biafra civil war, Effiong Jr. said: “I remember the plane bombing; that is one thing that stands out. I remember the planes bombing and one having to run away from them.

“Enugu was shelled. I remember I was playing with my brothers with thought it was thunder at first. Then we realized shells were landing and the movements were just constant. I think we must have lived in at least five different cities during the war.

“Most of the outside world did not have an inkling of what was happening inside Biafra. Some did. And you have got to give credit to places like Ireland; the church made that possible. You know the Catholic Church has had a long philanthropic tradition and that helped spread the word.”

On whether, Nigeria learnt any lesson from the civil war, he said: “Nigeria and Nigerians have not learnt their lessons from the Biafra war.

“We are perhaps more divided that we ever where. First of all the war wasn’t about unity but it even divided us more. Even today, people can’t really talk about having friends from other ethnic groups.

“When you look at elections for instance or the fact that went and lived in a different state; there would be restrictions in the kind of positions I could hold. You find out that the concept of unity has not actually been realized.”

I don’t understand you people at all, where do you want to belong Biafra or Nigeria?? NNAMDI KANU never exclude anyone despite the rejection from your kinsmen and south south areas. he stated it clearly even in his recent interview with Chanel’s TV yet you people are still waiting for him to consult you on what you know you are part of not just by privilege but by right… Let me ask you did NNAMDI KANU consult the IGBO’S???

Who are the minorities? i thought Biafra is only Igbo’s affair. South south cannot be part of Biafra. If yhey try it , by instict selfishness of Igbos they will be more marginalised than while with Nigeria. Biafra is fraudulent

The truth is that Kanu’s approach is faulty.
Even the entire country now sees the struggle for Biafra as pure South East affair. So long as I’m concerned, people who suffered most are the Aniomas, where I came from. My father is a veteran and still very much alive, he suffered so much in that war, lost his brothers, in fact my uncle who is also a veteran is an amputee till date credited to that war, we lost so many relatives to that war.
But with this Kanu approach, it looks like its only those across the Niger that are the real Biafrans.
I support the struggle but not with this exclusive approach of Kanu.

He is touring round Biafra land, he has visited River State but with tension in Anambra State he had to focus on the Anambra People to achieve his campaign of election boycott, he will surely extend his visit to every part of the land, remember the struggle is not an easy one. also remember his response to Wike the Rivers State Governor when he told him that is not for him to say Rivers State are not Biafra but the people.

      July 9, 2017 at 1:12 pm

Eni Samuel, who are they that are complaining? Are they no people in Owerri, Aba, Amambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Rivers, Akwa Ibom e.t.c, that are saying they are not Biafrans? Well, your response reflects your age and level of knowledge.

Nothing absolutely nothing like Gen Effiong jr..pls call him by his biological name…ok.all this fake interview was obtained by the Biafran enemies,Anti Igbos who want to creat enemities among us..secondry this issues of SS ,the so called SS we have different tribes it is combination of tribes make up SS of which Igbos are more related than many other tribes,i am sure they don’t see themselv as ONE Cross River is a good exampl..just make a mistake call a Crossbrian an Akwa Ibomite and listen to whot he will answer u if he did not rain an abuse on u.so everybody can speak on his mind but i am sure there are many frm SS that are ready to support Biafra to the cor..however Igbos alone with their blessesed wealth can be on their own as a Nation…so we all know the propgnder the Gamberies are carring against Igbos to dsterblised our brothers to see us as their enemies..but they have never allow christian northners to rule nigeria i wonder whot kind of love they have for our ppl at SS…rather than the oil.Abokis are wasting there time we must achieve our ambitions for sure.

God bless u my brother,i knew some talk frm some of our elders in SE&SS is a political talk, but i tell u go to the North and see how lovely our ppl are whether SS or SE but the Gamberies never want to see us as ONE that is they area with their little menterlity they believe they can disorganise us,if Benue,Kogi and Jos are seen themselvs as a cor Northners than how come Akwa-Ibom,Cross River,River;Delta and Bayalsa can not see themsevs are ONE.Each time among this states mention speak agains Igbos come and see how Aboki will be very happy,do they love Nigerdelta but know single oil block own by the above mention ppl even one person, how come they love Nigerdelta yet they are looting the oil money to develop their empty dry land..No wonder Aboki said if they give him chance he will fence Nigerdelta padlock it and pocket the key..hahahahaha wonder shall never end.

One sure thing Nigerians have not come to realise is that Igbo youths 90% of them ( am not a youth anymore ) have made up their mind for BIAFRA because they are not ready to suffer this cheating anymore. BIAFRA this time around is not an igbo affair, because BIAFRA will be a confederation of federated units that will made up of self governing semi independent units, and the selection for officers to run the center will be in a collegiate form from all the different units and BIAFRA will be based on freedom, good governance, and 0% tolerance on corruption. So no need for the other nations that make up eastern region to fear about Igbo domination. It will not happen that way. Their life and freedom will be by far better that this slavery they are into. You have your resources, you manage them and use them for your units and get some little % for the center.

If KANU is running Biafra as Igbo affair according to Effiong Junr. Remember,KANU started with radio Biafra broadcast where he stated that other minorities which you talk about is part of Biafraland.till the time he came down to Nigeria and was detained alongside other Igbo brothers who are still in detention, and I have not see you or any from the minority except Ahj.Asari Dikobo who came to pledge his support. I wonder what is holding you not have join in or Mr.Effiong, perhaps you think it is Rice and Stew that Nnandi KANU is eating and refused to invites you and thats why you refused to came and eat because KANU did not called you?. But this is freedom, Freedom fighting is matter of death and life, only braves plays the game. You are criticizing instead of be in struggles, tomorrow now if Biafra come lots of people like you will woke up from their sleeping slumping..Eekwaa?.

If it’s true, then he has so many good points. BIAFRA is going to run a confederated type of federalism, and all the units will be semi independent from the center. And it’s for all eastern people and not just Igbos.
