Biafra: Northern Elders Condemn Ohanaeze For Criticising FG’s Plan To Rearrest Nnamdi Kanu

Northern Elders

The Northern Elders Forum on Sunday condemned the apex Igbo socio-cultural group , Ohanaeze Ndigbo, for criticising the Federal Government’s plan to re -arrest the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo , Chief Nnia Nwodo, had accused the Federal Government of bias, double standard and violation of Kanu ’s fundamental human rights, especially after refusing to arrest the Arewa youths whom he said threatened the Igbo.

However , the Chairman of NEF , Mr . Paul Unongo , said the northern elders were disappointed that Ohanaeze had trivialised a criminal matter.

Unongo said Kanu ’ s case was 100 per cent different from the ultimatum issued by the northern youths, adding that there was no basis for comparison.

He added that the northern elders were able to prevail on their youths and the matter had since been resolved.

The NEF chairman said the same could not be said of Ohanaeze which had failed to control the excesses of IPOB and other South- East youths.

Unongo said , “Leaders should be careful about what they support . This is the kind of thing that happened when our young men from the North , feeling cheated and angry with the old men from Kanu ’s place for not cautioning Kanu , did what they did ( ultimatum ).

“But I came out immediately and said Nigerians have inalienable right to reside anywhere . I did that even to the detriment of my friendship with some people . But what Ohanaeze members are doing is that they are giving the impression that if someone commits a crime and is from their tribe , he shouldn ’t be tried . I don’t understand. Are they saying he ( Kanu ) should not be tried until someone from another part of the country is arrested ? That will invite chaos to the country.”

The NEF chairman said Kanu ’s matter should be left for the court to decide.

He stated that if it could be established that bail conditions had been flouted , the court should be allowed to do the needful.

Unongo said , “I will advise Ohanaeze and the Federal Government to let the matter be settled at the court because the issue of detention is in the hands of the court. The court had heard his case and the defence counsel asked for bail while the prosecution opposed it.

“It was granted and if the conditions were flouted , I think the prosecution is right to approach the same court to prove that the bail condition has been violated and to ask for the court to revoke the bail.”

Also speaking , the Chairman of the Northern Elders Council , Alhaji Tanko Yakasai , described Ohanaeze ’s position as trivial.

Yakasai said those who had been criticising the Federal Government for not following due process in the cases of embattled former National Security Adviser , Sambo Dasuki ; and the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria , Sheikh El – Zakzaky, were now lambasting the government for following due process regarding Kanu ’s bail revocation.

Yakasai said , “For anybody who is under trial and granted bail on certain conditions , the court has the right to ensure that he fulfils those conditions . Every Nigerian has the right to challenge him based on the conditions of bail . This is not a matter for debate.

“Every Nigerian should respect court orders. You cannot say because someone is your relation or is from your tribe , the court should not deal with the person. You cannot say that . It is either you abide by Nigeria ’s laws or not.

“There is no reason why people should ignore the fact that we have a judiciary which should be respected . Those who have been demanding bail to be granted Dasuki and El -Zakzakky and criticising the government for not obeying court orders are now criticising the same government for following the due process . I think it is too trivial for the leadership of Ohanaeze to speak like this .”
FG engaging in double standard –Afenifere.

The Pan -Yoruba sociology-cultural group, Afenifere on Sunday accused the Federal Government of not being fair in its handling of the Kanu issue , noting that such was not good for the country.

The group ’s publicity secretary , Yinka Odumakin , said Kanu ’s re -arrest would overheat the polity , stressing that the government should rather engage in dialogue with IPOB members instead of going after them.

He noted that the government failed to arrest the Arewa youths, who issued a quit notice to the Igbo, but wanted to re – arrest Kanu , describing such as double standard.

Odumakin said , “The idea of re -arresting Kanu will overheat the polity , more so when youths in the north that issued a notice to quit were not arrested . Even after the Kaduna State Governor and the Vice President ordered their arrest , the police did nothing.

“The Minister of Internal Affairs said the youths were not arrested because they claimed they were misquoted , but a few days ago , the youths in the presence of some governors withdrew the order. ”
Afenifere admonished the FG to evenly apply the law equally in all situations, regardless of the status or origins of those involved.

The group said , “The government is giving the impression that what is red line for someone from a particular region is green line for someone in another part of the country ; I think it is better the government engaged to bring down the tension rather than strong – arm tactics that would overheat the polity.”

“There is a clear double standard and that is not good for inclusiveness . What the government should do is ensure even application of the law and engage more youths more rather indulge in sabre-rattling ,” Afenifere said .

THE PLANNED KANU’s RE-ARREST, OHANEZE NDIGBO’s RESPONSE AND THE REST OF US

    By Charles Ogbu.

Yesterday, the 26th day of August, 2017, the OHANEZE Ndigbo President General, Chief John Nnia Nwodo, released a statement in which he fiercely rebuked the minister of Justice and Attorney General of Nigeria, Mr Abubakar Malami for calling for Nnamdi kanu’s re-arrest even while the genocidal quit notice-issuing Arewa Youths and the composers and distributors of the anti-Igbo hate songs yet walk the earth as free men and even enjoy protection from security agencies.

For those who are yet to fully grasp Chief Nwodo’s message, let me break it down in my own words:

Chief Nwodo was simply saying, Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB and by extension, Igbos, are not orphans. They have a father in me. We are republican in nature and as such, we can disagree and even quarrel amongst ourselves but it doesn’t change the fact that they are my children and I their father. If you come for one of them UNJUSTLY, we will close ranks and you will have all of us to contend with.

Chief nwodo’s message is loud, clear and very timely. And it represents the views of every Igbo man and woman on this particular issue.

And just so we are clear, Ndigbo through Chief Nwodo, are not opposing Kanu’s re-arrest because we think he’s above the law. Not at all. We are opposing Nnamdi Kanu’s re-arrest based on the two reasons below.

    1. We believe that a govt which woefully failed to arrest the Arewa youths who issued an open threat of genocide against Igbos living in the North has no moral right whatsoever to even mention the name ‘Nnamdi Kanu’ not to talk of re-arresting him.

By openly promising to arrest the Arewa Youths only to turn around and provide them with maximum security as they assembled to SUSPEND (not even withdraw) an atrocious quit notice which they had no right to issue in the first place, the security agency simply confirmed our suspicion that the quit notice was actually issued by Northern establishment with the prior knowledge of the Buhari led govt with a view to blackmailing Igbos into denouncing the Biafra agitation. The choice of “Arewa House” for the so called Kaduna declaration says it all. Ndigbo are no fools!

    2. Just like a certain Igbo socio-cultural group, Nzuko Umunna, once said, Nnamdi Kanu is not above the law but he must equally not be treated beneath the law.

After Kanu was arrested and detained for months, on December 17th, 2015 there was a ruling by an Abuja high court presided over by justice Adeniyi Ademola ordering the Nigerian govt to release the IPOB leader UNCONDITIONALLY. It is settled in law that even if a Judge gives a ruling while visibly under the influence of alcohol, that ruling must either be obeyed or appealed at a higher court. But, the Buhari led govt neither obeyed nor appealed Justice Ademola’s court ruling, thereby setting a very bad precedence.

On what ground does the same govt now expect Nnamdi Kanu to obey Justice Binta Nyako’s legally outrageous bail conditions depriving him of his constitutionally guaranteed fundamental human rights to freedom of speech, movement and association even when he has not been convicted of any crime????

Between Nnamdi Kanu who flouts his bail conditions because he believes those conditions violates his fundamental human rights AND President Buhari who choses which court ruling to obey or disobey, who posses a bigger threat to law and order and who should a responsible citizenry tackle first????

Between the Arewa Youths who, not only publicly asked their fellow citizens (Igbos) to quit the North or be visited with genocide but equally released anti-Igbo hate songs AND Nnamdi Kanu who is asking for a referendum with civil disobedience as his only weapon, who should a responsible govt arrest first???

If President Buhari’s fixation on Kanu and Biafra was about keeping Nigerians safe and united, why is he releasing the dreaded boko haram terrorists from Prison and gifting them with a juicy amnesty offer even when the terror group has killed thousands of Nigerians and still counting, displaced millions and even hoisted their flag on Nigeria’s territory???? And why is the president currently protecting his kinsmen, the marauding Fulani herdsmen with a strong army taskforce rather than prosecuting them for their number-less acts of terror across the country???

Why does it seem like under President Buhari, Nigeria operates two set of laws: One for people who share his religion (Islam) and ethnicity (Hausa/fulani) and another for those who don’t??

Under Buhari, is Nigeria officially George Orwell’s Animal Farm??

We would recal that this same Buhari exhibited exactly this kind of hate-induced ethnic bigotry some 3 decades ago when he overthrew the democratically elected govt of Shehu Shagari and Alex Ekwueme but went ahead to keep his fellow Fulani Muslim, Shagari, who was the President in a cozy apartment in the name of house arrest while the Igbo Christian, Ekwueme who was the vice president was thrown into Kirikiri maximum security prison.

To Ndigbo, I have words for you:

President Muhammadu Buhari is hate made flesh. He is a prisoner to his own hate. He harbours a generational hatred for not just you but all other people except hausa/fulani SUNNI Muslims. Stop trying to appease a man who hates you for no reason. It was the seeming disunity between your elders and the Youths that emboldened your Oppressor in the first place. Now, Let his mindless hatred serve to unite you into a common front. You survived Buhari before. You will survive him again!

To President Buhari, I have something to tell you sir:

If you continue to make injustice a law under your administration, Ndigbo will be left with no choice than to activate resistance as a duty!

For other Nigerians, I wish to break words with you:

Look for a place and weep yourselves to sleep. But weep not for Kanu or the Igbos. Weep for your country which has since been hijacked by morally bankrupt men hellbent on taking everyone to Golgotha.

    Indeed, There Was A Country!

Why should you Northern old fools called Elders be happy with Ohanaeze for standing with truth?

Of course we known that you old evil men from the North hate truth and if Ohanaeze supported your evil plans you old animals would have be happy with them.

What about you Hausa Fulani idiotic Elders, what have you old animals said about the coalition of Northern youths who actually commit treason by issuing quit notice to Igbo’s living in your disease ravaged North?

Have you so called Northern Elders blame government for not arresting and prosecute them?

How many times have you Northern Elders come out to express your disappointment for government not arrest and prosecute Fulani herdsmen and their sponsors ?

How times have you Northern Elders cone out open to support war against Bokoharam?

Why are you animals worried about Nnamdi KANU?

    What is Nnamdi KANU’s crime?

Can you animals tell us any offence committed by Nnamdi KANU that is known to Nigerian law?

Hypocritical imbecilic old maggots, God punish all of evil Elders from North, animals.

Rearrest Nnamdi KANU at your peril.

They have never condemned their youths even when they murder people. I think the Northern elders are not getting it or maybe perhaps, something is wrong wit their ears and reasoning mentality. Pls, what stops them from understanding the simple English of “Self Actualization.!?”
The Eastern Region known as Biafra are tired of the perceived Beitish contraption called Nigeria ans now, we want OUT!
The Hausa/ Fulani cannot force us into turbulent marriage that has endangered millions of Biafrans lives and still under threat till date.
Biafrans are fed up being in d association called Nigeria.
Since the past 50 years of Biafra/ Nigeria war, nothing is done in Biafraland to show national integration. Yet, the Arewa compalin that we should hold our governors responsible. If we hold our governors responsible, why is the FGN using d cash from Biafra resources to develop Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, Lagos etc in d North and West but skip d Eastern Region? Why don’t every region develop on its state’s fund?
Enough of these Northern Elders blabs. All we ask is a #Referendum for us to decide. #ReferendumIsNotWar

I never knew that Paul Unongo is this daft and brainless that he cannot understand or see double standard in the issue of Nnamdi Kanu and the Arewa youths. He cannot see the constitutional rights of an individual and a court pronouncement which takes precedence. Can a court deny any person his constitutional right? He is so overwhelmed by the Arewa post that he overlooked the killing of his own people by the Fulani herdsmen. Unongo wake up from your slumber.

    August 28, 2017 at 9:30 am

There’s nothing like Arewa youths that gave quit notice, it is those brainless old animals of northern elders that gave the quit notice, thinking that we will back off on Biafra agitation not knowing that we are really ready for them. Bulshit!

Foolish FG and Arewa and useless elders.. Why avent they arrest Arewa imbecile youth. As reasonable as they claimed to be, did they know that people have right for self determination. Is it by force for people to belong in a country they don’t want? Why can’t they advice their so called government to conduct referendum since Nigeria is signatory to UN and being signatory to the union makes their constitiution superior than any country constitiution.. Is it not their president that went to UN nation and be campaigning for self determination of sahara and palistian. Why can’t he show example of what he preaches in his own country by conducting referendum.. IPOB is not asking for war, all they want is for government to conduct referendum so that we can decide our faith and future because Nigeria is signatory to UN.. Counter me with proof if what I said is wrong.. To be biased in ur reasoning..One thing about Nigerians is that they always live in denial.. You can’t tell ur self the truth.. We are not one and we can’t be one.. Civilized country re conducting referendum to avoid war because they have encountered so many wars and don’t want it to repeat again. Why can’t Nigeria do the same..

Northern elders let me ask u question. When Buhari floated court order for Kanu what did u do? Nothing right. Did u know that those bail conditions were constitutionally illegal, violated human rights? Binta gave the conditions out of hate agreed with ur son Buhari knowing or unknowingly that were unconstitutional. So Kanu did not float any bail conditions period. You will not have peace untill u let BIAFRA go as long as it takes. Obey the United Nations and arrest your youths case closed.
