Buhari Finally Sacks Babachir Lawal, Ayo Oke, Appoints Another Northerner As SGF

Babachir Lawal

President Muhammadu Buhari has sacked the previously suspended Babachir Lawal, as the secretary to the government of the federation (SGF).

The President also terminated the appointment of the Director-General, National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ambassador Ayodele Oke.

A statement released by presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, confirmed both sackings and the appointment of Boss Mustapha, as the new secretary to the government of the federation (SGF).

Adesina said Buhari fired Lawal in line with the recommendation of the panel set up to probe the allegations levelled against him.

Buhari’s silence after receiving the report of the panel that indicted both officials, headed by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo since August had drawn criticisms from various quarters, especially from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“President Muhammadu Buhari has studied the report of the panel headed by the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, which investigated allegations against the suspended secretary to the government of the federation, Mr Babachir David Lawal, and the director-general, National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ambassador Ayo Oke,” the statement read.

“The president accepted the recommendation of the panel to terminate the appointment of Mr Lawal, and has appointed Mr Boss Mustapha as the new secretary to the government of the federation. The appointment takes immediate effect.”

“President Buhari also approved the recommendation to terminate the appointment of Ambassador Oke, and has further approved the setting up of a three-member panel to, among other things, look into the operational, technical and administrative structure of the Agency and make appropriate recommendations.”

Buhari needs a cup of cold water to calm down. The load of office is not what he expected to carry alone. He cannot please everyone at the same time. The slow “death in office” of overzealous officials can be stressful. Lawal and Oke be smart enough to rest in peace.
