Ikpeazu Bows To NJC, Swears In Ogwe As Acting Chief Judge

Onuoha Arisa Ogwe

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State has finally sworn in Justice Onuoha Arisa Ogwe as the state’s acting chief judge, following directives by the National Judicial Commission (NJC) against the earlier inauguration of Justice Obisike Orji who had been suspended by the commission.

The NJC had last week faulted the swearing-in of Orji by Ikpeazu after receipt of a resolution passed by the House of Assembly, which suspended the chief judge.

Orji’s sins, according to the Assembly, border on tyranny, gross misconduct, incompetence and infamy.

Governor Ikpeazu, after swearing Ogwe in acting chief judge, disclosed that he acted in compliance with the NJC directives.

He maintained that the action of the state government was appropriate.

He said: “Our desire is to stabilise the judicial system of the state. In the search of this, this state is determined to abide by the directives of the NJC.”

He charged the acting chief Judge to assist his administration in stabilising the Judicial system for the common good.

In his acceptance speech, Justice Ogwe thanked Governor Ikpeazu for accepting the directives from the NJC.

“You have acquainted yourself as a man. I am already a judge and what I have been asked to do is to provide leadership for my brothers,” Ogwe disclosed.

Earlier in a media briefing to justify the position of the state government in abiding by the NJC directive to swear in Ogwe as the acting chief judge, Umeh Kalu, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, said the state government, having received the position of the NJC, “is committed to the rule of law”.
