JUST IN: Jubilation As Super Falcons Likely To Qualify For Round Of 16 — First Time In 20 Years

Super Falcons

There was wild jubilation on Wednesday in the Super Falcons’ camp in Rennes, France as Nigeria’s chances of playing in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Round of 16 were boosted following the completion of Group D fixtures.

England beat Japan 3-0 and more importantly, Argentina fought back from 2-0 down to draw 3-3 with Scotland in a thrilling affair.

The result ensures Scotland cannot qualify as one of the best losers.

A live Instagram video recorded by Super Falcons captain, Desire Oparanozie, showed the Falcons in wild jubilations five minutes to the end of the game.

They were seen jumping out of their room, hugging and chanting victory songs, knowing that the hopes of qualifying for the round of 16 have been brightened.

They rejoiced that the same rule which almost got them knocked out of the competition favoured them with the referee ordering a retake of Argentina’s penalty, which was earlier parried by the Scotland’s goalkeeper.

The Super Falcons will now be hoping to clinch one of the last two spots reserved for third-placed teams, with the three points and -2 goal difference they have accrued.

Two of the slots have already gone to China and Brazil

For the African champions to qualify now, New Zealand must hold Cameroon to a draw.

Also, Thailand, who have conceded 18 times already, should not lose by more than three goals to Chile.

If all the teams are tied at the end of the group matches, FIFA will then use Fair Play or goals scored/goals conceded, to decide the 16th team in the knockout stage.

Meanwhile, if the Super Falcons progress into the Round of 16, it would be the first time in 20 years.
