UN Reacts As Boko Haram Kill Aid Worker In Borno

The United Nations has expressed shock and sadness over the killing of an aid worker in Maiduguri, Borno State by Boko Haram terrorists.

Edward Kallon, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, thereafter called for the unconditional release of other humanitarian workers in insurgents’ captivity saying.

It would be recalled that the terrorists murdered an NGO worker, blaming the government for been deceptive in negotiations, thus forcing them to take the action.

The execution was carried out by the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), a splinter of Boko Haram which has been growing in power and influence in north-eastern Nigeria.

The aid worker killed is said to be a staff of the Action Against Hunger and one of the six aid workers kidnapped by the terrorists about two months ago.

“My most heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends and colleagues. I am appalled and deeply saddened by the news of the horrific execution of an aid worker this morning,” Kallon said.

“I am also extremely concerned about the increasingly dangerous and restrictive operating environment for implementing humanitarian assistance in crisis affected areas. Humanitarian aid workers continue to face challenges as they strive to deliver urgent, life-saving assistance,” he added.

The UN official while calling on appropriate security agencies to fish out the killers and bring them to justice, renewed call for all parties to the conflict to ensure the protection of aid workers and respect of international humanitarian law.
