Policeman Submits Himself For Trial After Killing Truck Driver

A police officer who reportedly shot and killed a truck driver during an argument at a checkpoint along Akure/Owo federal highway in Ondo state has finally turned himself after being in hiding for days.

The spokesperson for the Ondo state police command, Femi Joseph, in a statement identified the officer as Sergeant Idowu Omosuyi, Channels TV reports.

Joseph said the police sergeant shot the driver in the head after a heated argument with the policemen at the checkpoint.

SP Joseph stated that Sergeant Omosuyi surrendered himself on Thursday, December 5, to a team of investigators.

“The Ondo State Police Command is pleased to inform the general public that the erring officer, Sergeant Idowu Omosuyi who shot and killed a haulage driver at a point in Uso, near Owo, a few days ago has turned himself in, the police spokesperson said.

“He surrendered himself this afternoon to a team of investigators Constituted by the Commissioner of Police Ondo State to probe the incident.

The Ondo police command disclosed the sergeant is presently undergoing an Orderly Room trial at the state headquarters Akure.

The police assured the public that the police will never shield any of its personnel that commits any manner of infraction or illegality.

Recall that Ado Saleh, a truck driver operating along Akure-Owo expressway, was reportedly shot dead on Monday, December 2, for refusing to pay N50 bribe to police officers at a checkpoint.

Witnesses told Premium Times that Saleh was shot during a heated argument with the police at a checkpoint.

“It was at the cause of the argument that one of the police officers shot him,” a witness who asked for his name not be disclosed said.
