I Quit Turkish Club To Protect My Family — Mikel Obi
Ex Super Eagles Captain and former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi has said he canceled his contract with the Turkish Super Lig Club Trabzonspor to protect his family..
The midfielder ended his contract with Trabzonspor on Tuesday after he criticized the Turkish Super Lig for allowing full stadiums during matches despite the Coronavirus pandemic.
Since the outbreak of the virus, several sports stars have been infected while games have either been cancelled or postponed.
Mikel took to Instagram to send goodwill messages to the his fans, coaches, ex teammates and the medical team for their positive contributions to his stay at the Turkish club.
“I would like to thank all the fans for their support. I also want to say thanks to all my teammates, technical crew, medical team and the kit man Ayatabe for all we’ve achieved this season so far, wish you guys best of luck in winning the league. It was one of the hardest decision I’ve had to make, but in current situation we all need take care of our families, spend time with them and protect them. #lifefirst #stayhome #family.”
Mikel Obi has won two English Premier League titles, 3 English FA cups , a Uefa champions league and a Uefa Europa League, all with his former club Chelsea before moving to the Turkish side.
