What We’ll Do To Abba Kyari If Found Guilty — House of Reps

Abba Kyari

The Nigerian House of Representatives has stated that it will ‘review’ a honorary award given to embattled police officer, DCP Abba Kyari.

Kyari has been in the news for the past 2 weeks after the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, indicted him over his involvement with disgraced fraudster, Ramon Olorunwa Abas a.k.a Hushpuppi.

The house maintained that Kyari will remain its honouree until he is found guilty of the allegations against him by the FBI in the United States.

Recall that Kyari was suspended by the Police Service Commission on the recommendation of the IGP, Usman Baba, pending an investigation into his alleged crimes by the country’s police authorities.

It can also be recalled that Kyari was honoured by the house on June 11, 2020 for his exceptional service to the Nigeria Police Force and Nigeria. The invitation and honour followed a motion moved by the member representing Chibok Federal Constituency in Borno State, Ahmad Jaha, two days earlier.

Speaking on the issue, Spokespeson for the House, Hon. Ben Kalu disclosed; “The position of our law is that you are innocent until you are proved guilty. It is not the only award that he has. We cannot begin to strip him of his award; he is a suspect at the moment. Lawmakers are not lawbreakers.”

“The constitution says you are innocent until proved guilty. But if at the end of the day, he is convicted, then the House would have a reason to review its position. But at the moment, he is still under investigation.”

The FBI accused Kyari of collecting N8m bribe from Hushpuppi to arrest and detain a “co-conspirator,” Chibuzo Kelly Vincent.
