N1.3bn Fraud: EFCC Confirms Release Of VON DG, Osita Okechukwu
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced that Osita Okechukwu, the director-general of Voice of Nigeria (VON), has been released after being detained on fraud charges.
On January 29, about 1:30 p.m., Okechukwu arrived at the EFCC offices in Abuja after receiving an invitation regarding a case involving suspected conspiracy, abuse of office, and theft of public funds.
He was questioned for allegedly embezzling N1.3 billion, according to reports.
Speaking to TheCable on Saturday, Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC spokesperson said, “he was released on Monday”, adding that investigations will continue.
In recent months, the VON DG has been relatively outspoken on national concerns.
He contributed to the discourse on the electoral bill and recently requested that Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), be released from the Department of State Services’ custody (DSS).
