Olisa Igbonwa: Man 'Buried Alive' For Taking 'Ichie Ngene' Title In Anambra

Olisa Igbonwa, a Nigerian man from Alor in Idemili South Local Government of Anambra State, has been ‘buried’ and mourned by elders of his community for taking the ‘Ichie Ngene’ title.

Igbonwa was alleged to have taken the chieftaincy title as Ichie Ngene, a decision the community felt was not within his right, leading to a mock burial conducted on him by the elders of the village.

Oriental Times gathered that Igbonwa took the Ichie Ngene title, which was traditionally reserved for someone else, and the act was considered sacrilegious by the community’s custom.

He was given an ultimatum of 30 days to renounce the title. However, after the time period given to Igbonwa elapsed without compliance, the elders of the village unanimously performed the ritual of a mock burial.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, March 2, Igbonwa appeared at the police headquarters in Awka to report that he was alive.

Igbonwa, who was at the office of the Anambra Police Public Relations Officer, said that he is not only alive but would complete the taking of the Ichie title, irrespective of the threat to be buried alive.

According to him, he received a chieftaincy title from HRM Igwe Alor but was threatened by some people to renounce the chieftaincy title within 30 days or face dire consequences.

However, the police in a statement by the spokesperson, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, said investigation was ongoing and promised to communicate further details.
