I Earned N87k As A Teacher Back Home, Now I Receive Over N500k Teaching Abroad – Woman Reveals

Teaching abroad

A woman has spoken out about the pay gap between what she earned as an English teacher in Ghana and what she earns now that she is teaching abroad – specifically in Vietnam.

Mercy Agyei Ankomah, a Ghanaian lady, said she earned Ghc1,500 (N87k) while teaching in Ghana, but now earns over $1,300 (N540k) in Vietnam.

She dislosed this during an interview with SVTV Africa’s Nyaami, adding that she has no plans to return because “Ghana is now expensive.”

Ankomah, on the other hand, raised concern about payment delays, noting that the profession was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Before the pandemic, Black teachers took $600. But during the pandemic, the white teachers left. So now I take $1,300. Others also receive $1,200 to $3,000,” she said.

She used to teach at Juaben Senior High School in Ghana and had a happy life until a travel agent persuaded her to relocate as teaching abroad could earn her more.
