Colorado Signs Abortion Bill Into Law
Jared Polis, the governor of Colorado in the United States, signed breakthrough legislation on Monday that protects women’s right to abortion.
The Reproductive Health Equity Act, which codifies women’s right to make reproductive healthcare decisions without interference from the government, was signed into law by the governor following the longest debate in the history of the Colorado House of Representatives.
“In the State of Colorado, the serious decision to start or end a pregnancy with medical assistance will remain between a person, their doctor and their faith,” he said.
“No matter what the Supreme Court does in the future, people in Colorado will be able to choose when and if they have children,” Polis said at a bill signing ceremony at his mansion in downtown Denver.
The bill was approved by the Colorado legislature last month, after Republicans spent hours debating against it.
The bill was debated in the House for 24 hours straight, making it one of the longest debates in the history of the legislature.
As a result of this new development, abortion is now legal in Colorado at all stages.
It is one of only seven states where a pregnancy can be aborted at any time during the pregnancy.
According to a Pew Research Center poll, 59 percent of respondents believe abortion should be allowed in all or most situations.
“A vast majority of women support their own right to an abortion,” Richardson, a policy advisor said.
He went on to say that present religious extremists are succeeding in dragging America back into the stone ages, despite the proclaimed goals of America’s founding fathers, who wanted a separation of church and state.
