Community High School In Imo Calls For State Government Attention
By Sampson Uhuegbu, Owerri
The buildings of Community High School, Abba in Nwangele Local Government Area, Imo State, are now at the verge of collapse. This is one of the best Secondary Schools in Nigeria that has produced prominent personalities today who are excelling in various walks of life.
The school’s dilapidated infrastructure, which can be said to be not only suitable for learning appear to have become a breeding ground for social vices.
The Senator Hope Uzodimma’s negligence on the school could be contributing to rising poor academic performance; as well as making it inconducive for learning.
In a Press interview with a Junior Secondary Student (JSS) of the College who gave his name as Amarachi Nwosu, told our reporter who visited the school, said, “We lack libraries and laboratories. Our classrooms are leaking. When it rains, our classes are flooded. Government should come to our aid”.
Another student who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “The school was not fenced. There are no security personnel and this is a female school. Our pupils are raped often.
“Go to some classrooms, you will see where the ‘bad boys’ hide to smoke hemp. We want the school to be fenced,” she said.
When the Commissioner for Education, Professor Sylvester Okorondu, was contacted on the telephone, he declined comment.
Efforts made to reach the state Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Barr. Ada Okwuonu, proved abortive as mobile telephone line was not reachable as at the time of filing this report.
