Kenya Supreme Court Rules on Presidential Election Petition
Kenya’s Supreme Court has upheld William Ruto’s victory in last month’s presidential election, dismissing his rival Raila Odinga’s claims that the vote was marred by rigging and irregularities.
The petition is dismissed, the seven-member court said in a unanimous decision read by Chief Justice Martha Koome on Monday.
In the election held on August 9, the official results showed that Ruto, who is presently the vice president, received 50.5% of the vote, while Odinga, who is a former prime minister, received 48.8%.
The ruling clears the way for Ruto, 55, to be sworn in as President Uhuru Kenyatta’s successor next week.
The decision of the apex court is final, and there is no possibility of appealing it.
