EFCC Reveals Why Obiano Was Arrested

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed the reason for the arrest of Willie Obiano, the former governor of Anambra State.

It was previously reported by the Oriental Times that the former governor was apprehended by the anti-graft agency on Thursday night at the Lagos International Airport, while en route United States.

The development came just a few hours after he handed over power to the new Governor of the State, Chukwuma Charles Soludo.

Wilson Uwajaren, the Public Relations Officer for the commission, confirmed the arrest when he spoke with BBC Pidgin on the phone.

According to a spokesman for the EFCC, Obiano had been placed on the agency’s watchlist before the handover on Thursday.

He said, “Obiano has been on our watchlist for sometime now. He had immunity as a governor and that is why we could not arrest him before now.

“Today he lost the immunity and was traveling out of the country before we finally arrested him”.
