Ryan Kelley, a gubernatorial candidate in Michigan, has been charged with four misdemeanors in connection with the attack on the United States Capitol that occurred on January 6, 2021.

The FBI arrested Kelley at his home in Allendale, in western Michigan, on Thursday. Following his arraignment, he was released without having to post bond.

BBC reports that Kelley’s campaign team did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Meanwhile, in response to the majority of the judge’s questions concerning his rights and obligations, the real estate agent answered: “understood”. Although the charges were filed in Washington, D.C., the initial proceeding was held in a Grand Rapids federal courtroom.

According to the documents, Ryan Kelley was a part of the crowd that attempted to disrupt the process of certifying President Biden as the winner of the election that took place in November of 2020. The proof consists of pictures and videos of the uprising that were uploaded to the internet.

Kelley, a candidate for governor on the Republican ticket, will be on the ballot for the statewide primary election in August. However, that is not the case for a large number of other Republican candidates, all of whom were removed from the ballot after being suspected of submitting fraudulent signatures.

On Thursday afternoon, a post titled “Political Prisoner” surfaced on Kelley’s campaign Facebook page. The post consisted of only those two words.

The criminal complaint alleges that Ryan Kelley, among other things, committed an act of physical violence against a person or property, as well as knowingly entered restricted buildings or grounds and engaged in disorderly conduct.
