“I Can’t Recite Nigerian National Anthem” – Alex Iwobi

Alex Iwobi

Gunner star and Nigerian forward, Alex Iwobi has said he can’t sing the Nigerian national anthem.

Iwobi expressed he didn’t know the words to the Nigerian national song of praise too well, proposing that he mouths along to the hymn when the camera was centered around him before the beginning of international matches.

Iwobi, who scored the goal that saw the Super Eagles to the Russia World Cup against Zambia made the revelation while being quizzed by Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry and Philadelphia Eagles star, Jay Ajayi.

Alex Iwobi stated that;

“I know it but I don’t know it well. When they are recording, the camera comes on you I know what to say. For the Nigerian viewers I do know it.”

Iwobi was also quizzed about scoring the goal that qualified the Super Eagles for the 2018 World Cup and he said:

“When I scored I saw my parents in the crowd, I was almost crying. It was a nice feeling.”

On how nervous he was when he met Thierry Henry for the first time, Iwobi answered:

“I met him when I was a kid for the first time, so was young, I was excited. I was in Arsenal academy. I was very young.’’

Asked if he watched the Super Bowl, Iwobi said:

“Honestly no, honestly no. Sleep went to me.”

In another news, Arsenal player Alex Iwobi was allegedly a target of monkey chants from CSKA Moscow during their Europa League clash in Moscow on Thursday, April 12.

Iwobi was a second-half substitute in the second clash which ended 2-2.

According to a Reuters witness, the Nigeria international and his Arsenal teammate, Danny Welbeck were targets of monkey chants from CSKA Moscow.

Reuters report that one of their photographer at the ground heard monkey chants from the CSKA Moscow fans towards Iwobi and Welbeck.

UEFA, however, told Reuters that they have not gotten any report of racism during the Europa League game on Thursday.

The European football body has only opened disciplinary proceedings against CSKA Moscow for infractions including throwing objects and setting off fireworks.
