Multiple Deaths After Violence Breaks Out At Turkish Polls As Erdoğan Seeks For Supreme Powers

Multiple deaths have been reported in Turkey after violence erupted at polls across the country as voters have their say on sweeping changes to the nation’s constitution.

Reports claim at least two people died on Sunday, April 16th after fracas broke out outside a polling station as the country votes on whether to give President Tayyip Erdoğan more power.

According to Turkey’s state-run news agency, Anadolu, two people lost their lives in a fight outside a polling station in the southeastern province of Diyarbakir.

Anadolu’s report said that a quarrel between two families boiled over and turned deadly in school’s garden where voters were having their say in Turkey’s referendum.

A “Yes” vote would see Turkey’s parliamentary system replaced by a more presidential one and hand Erdoğan greater power. It would also see the post of prime minister – currently held Binali Yıldırım – be abolished after 2019 and new rules gradually introduced.
