Mali Coup: Nigerian Govt Condemns Removal Of President Keita

The Nigerian government through Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister of Foreign Affairs has condemned the military coup that took place in Mali and the resignation of President Ibrahim Keita.

Recall that a military coup on Tuesday led to the resignation of President Keita after several months of protests by the people of Mali over his government.

The Renegading soldiers had detained the president and some top Mali government officials on Tuesday.

Shortly after the occurrence, Keita announced his resignation and dissolved his cabinet.

He had said, “I want no blood to be spilled to keep me in power,” BBC quoted him as saying.

Reacting to the Mali situation, Onyema took to Twitter on Wednesday to condemn the development.

The minister however, called for an immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order.

He said, “The Nigerian Government unequivocally condemns the coup d’état that took place in #Mali yesterday and demands the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order.

“We welcome the urgent activation of the #ECOWAS Standby force.”
