A governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress in Abia state, Ambassador Chidike Ukauwa, has lambasted the Ohanaeze Ndigbo for its call for single term of six years, saying the proposal was to deny Igbos the presidency in 2023. He said the single term of six years being proposed by the apex Igbo socio-political organization, would not bring to an end to the myriad of problems facing the country, rather it would impede the development of Nigeria. Recall that Ohanaeze Ndigbo had on Monday, in Awka, Anambra state, after its restructuring summit called for a rotational single term of six years for the President and state governors. Speaking with journalists in Umuahia, on Tuesday, Ukauwa, explained that the proposed single term would not address the marginalization of the South East zone. He said that Ohanaeze’s proposal was undemocratic, pointing out that the North, South West and South-South had completed their two terms. According to the APC chieftain,”South East must have their two term of eight years before Ohanaeze should come up with the proposal. “It would amount to cheat, if the people of South East zone are denied the presidency and not given the opportunity to produce Nigerian president that will serve for eight years. “What we want is Nigerian president of Igbo extraction in 2023 and creation of additional states in South East. So, the single term of six years proposed by Ohanaeze Ndigbo would not bring the needed development in the country”. The governorship hopeful called on Ndigbo to rally round President Muhammadu Buhari to complete his second term, so as to enable an Igbo man emerge President of Nigeria come 2023. He insisted that Igbos must have their own turn, to enable them have their eight years of two terms. Ukauwa called on President Buhari and the National Assembly to ignore the proposed single term of six years for the President and state Governors, saying that it would not solve the problems ravaging the nation.
